Huion Kamvas Pro 16 Graphics Tablet Review

Art has always been a passion of mine. Drawing, in particular, is a skill and hobby I have refined and developed through traditional artmaking practices. 

When I was given the opportunity to not only test out but review the Huion Kamvas Pro 16, I was extremely excited, as digital art can allow for limitless creativity and expression!

Since I have limited experience using digital artmaking platforms, I’m able to review a high-quality drawing tablet such as the Huion Kamvas Pro 16 with a fresh and unbiased perspective. 

Let’s get into the review!

Here’s a detailed overview of its key features:

• Programmable Press Keys

On the Huion Kamvas Pro 16, there are six programmable buttons that can be personally customized to suit your workflow and preferences.

These include specific functions such as zoom in/zoom out, undo, redo, eraser, etc.

• Battery-Free Pen

Huion’s PW507 digital pen is an essential component of the Huion Kamvas Pro 16. It doesn’t require any form of charging or use of batteries.

The pen nib is thin, compared to the thicker nib of other stylists like the Apple Pencil, allowing for precise and smooth pen strokes.

I also found it extremely comfortable and easy to use, leading to a rather natural feeling whilst drawing digitally.

It also features two thin buttons on its side, which can be adjusted to match certain functions according to your preferences. 

Additionally, the Huion Kamvas Pro 16 comes with replaceable pen nibs, which is extremely convenient!

• Flexible Connectivity Options

To begin your artmaking, Huion offers a simplified setup featuring a 3-in-1 cable.

Your secondary device (PC) must be able to support this connectivity to power it up.

This flexibility ensures a tidy workspace, as it reduces cable clutter and allows for seamless integration with your existing setup.

• Adjustable Stand

The adjustable and foldable stand is sleek and lightweight, allowing for comfortable drawing angles from 20 to 50 degrees that suit every artist.

You can use the adjustable stand during drawing sessions or as a resting place when the tablet is not in use.

• Full Lamination and Anti-Glare Screen

The Huion Kamvas Pro 16 is slightly textured and laminated, which effortlessly reduces parallax to almost zero, ensuring accurate cursor position.

The textured screen also results in a more natural feeling to draw on, as it feels more similar to paper compared to your usual tablet screens.

• Huion Artist Glove

The Huion Artist Glove assists in enhancing the drawing experience by reducing possible friction and smudging on the surface of the Huion Kamvas Pro 16.

The glove is able to effortlessly glide along the screen, resulting in comfort and an uninterrupted drawing process. 

• High-Resolution Display

The Huion Kamvas Pro 16 has exceptional visuals, with 1920 x 1080 pixels (16:9) and 5080 LPI resolution.

This results in wonderful, clear images, effortlessly allowing you to showcase more intricate details in your artmaking.

Build & Appearance

The drawing tablet is encased in an aluminium alloy, providing durability while maintaining a lightweight profile at just 1.35kg.

It’s slim, too, with a thickness of 10mm, making it easily portable.

In my personal opinion, the Kamvas Pro 16’s sleek and modern design is both aesthetically appealing and functional to an artist such as myself, as it’s able to suit and easily fit into any creative workspace.

Paired with its amazing screen quality of  1920 x 1080 pixels, it successfully offers a stunning canvas for digital work. 

The adjustable stand heightens the device’s ability to accommodate a diverse amount of personal preferences (from 20 to 50 degrees).

This element is extremely ergonomically friendly, as I also tend to use the adjustable stand if needed for other devices, such as a laptop.

Whilst useful, I find the pen holder somewhat of an eyesore and rather awkward. Compared to the sleek look of the tablet, the pen stands vertically or horizontally beside it in the storage container for the spare nibs, which isn’t too appealing to look at.

I believe a cleaner look could have been achieved if the battery-free pen had been held via magnetism to the side of the Kamvas Pro. 

Unfortunately, the Huion Kamvas Pro 16 does not have a touch screen and is only compatible with the battery-free pen.

Like most people, I’m used to touch-screen devices. So, at first, I was constantly trying to touch the screen, only to be confused when nothing happened.

Despite the time it takes to adjust to the lack of touch response, it does ensure accidental mistakes aren’t made whilst drawing when your hands are on the screen. 

Setup

Thankfully, as an artist who isn’t too used to digital art tablets, I was glad to discover that the setup process of the Huion Kamvas Pro 16 was relatively straightforward. 

The 3-in-1 cable saves the trouble of worrying about an endless tangle of cords by seamlessly connecting the tablet to a power source and your computer. 

Once the tablet is connected via the cable, the next step is to download the necessary drivers or software provided by Huion onto your computer (you can find the URL in the instructions manual).

The drivers/software is required to be able to use the drawing tablet.

Once downloaded, you’ll notice that the blue Huion Tablet app will now be accessible. This is where the customization of the programmable press keys occurs, as well as the two buttons on the side of the battery-free pen! 

Here, you can apply different functions to each button, such as undo/redo, eraser, zoom in/zoom out, etc.

The package of the Huion Kamvas Pro 16 also includes stickers that you can correlate to the function chosen (although I haven’t personally used mine yet for fear that I’ll want to change my buttons later, meaning the stickers wouldn’t match).

It may take time to decide what you like, so don’t feel rushed to immediately make decisions!

Regrettably, the Kamvas Pro 16 doesn’t come with its own drawing software, so you need to have your own.

I personally use Clip Paint Studio for my artmaking, which works easily and exceptionally well with the Huion tablet. 

Once your tablet is up and running, you might notice that your pen doesn’t work when you tap the screen. But don’t worry, it’s super easy to fix!

Simply go onto the Huion Tablet app and press “Working Area.” Here, you can switch which screen the pen correlates to (i.e., to the screen of the Huion Kamvas Pro 16) and begin your artmaking!

Tabs can also be easily taken across from your computer screen to the tablet by picking up the tab and sliding your mouse to the right and out of the screen.

You can do this not only for your own drawing software but any other tab, meaning the tablet can be used as an additional monitor, not just as a graphic tool. 

Hooray! Your Huion Kamvas Pro 16 is ready to go! Digital art can now be created with ease, allowing your creativity to flourish to its fullest extent!

Ease of Use

Simply put, the Huion Kamvas Pro 16 is extremely easy to learn how to use!

By not overcomplicating the buttons or features, Huion has reached a user-friendly design that prioritizes accessibility for artists of all skill and age levels.

The battery-free pen is also honestly my favorite part about the Huion tablet as a whole!

Its unique shape allows for wrist comfortability for long periods of time, and the two additional buttons are extremely convenient and easy to use. 

Additionally, while the Kamvas Pro 16 is primarily used when on the stand, I tend to take advantage of its lightness and comfort to use the tablet against my legs from time to time.

This effectively rehabilitates any possible neck pain when leaning over for long periods of time over my desk (which is highly possible when you draw a lot)!

How I Tested Huion Kamvas Pro 16

In order to fully explore the Huion Kamvas’s capabilities as an artistic tool, I immediately launched my drawing software of choice, Clip Studio Paint, and began to examine the tablet’s unwavering potential by drawing.

Firstly, I wanted to test the performance of the battery-free pen. This specifically included checking; 

• Pen sensitivity
• If the pen allowed for accurate cursor position
• If stroke time had any delay

I also thoroughly assessed the tablet’s internal settings by adjusting its brightness, resolution, and wide color gamut. This was done to ensure that the Huion Kamvas Pro 16 could accurately and reliably portray the refinements of my art.  

These evaluations happened over the course of multiple hours and days, as I wanted to ensure I fully understood and utilized all of the Huion Kamvas Pro 16’s primary features.

Alternatives to Huion Kamvas Pro 16

While the Huion Kamvas Pro 16 stands out due to its high quality and features, potential alternatives include products from Wacom – such as the Wacom Cintiq series – which also offer high-resolution displays and pen technology but at different prices and sizes.

Value for Money

The Huion Kamvas Pro 16 offers exceptional value for money, with an average retail price of around US$380.

This makes it relatively affordable, as it falls on the cheaper side for screened tablets.

In addition to its advanced features, such as a battery-free pen, an adjustable stand, high-quality resolution, programmable press keys, and more, the Huion Kamvas Pro 16 proves its high quality and worth!

Overall, my experience with the Huion Kamvas Pro 16 couldn’t have left me more impressed, and excited to use it more!

It has proven to be an extremely reliable and versatile drawing tablet with features that are not only high quality, but extremely useful.

It also demonstrated high inclusivity for a wide range of users due to its simple design and easy functions. 

Despite my slight nitpicks, I believe that, over time, the Huion Kamvas Pro 16 will become embedded within my art-making processes as an indispensable tool for digital creativity.

I cannot wait to see where my journey as an artist will take me now that I have this device!
