If you’re looking for a comprehensive PlaceIt review, you’ve come to the right place.
The thing about design is that the designer designs for the real world. Designs, therefore, should not only look good on paper but also look good in person.
That is why mockups have been an indispensable part of the design process.
In the pre-digital era, designers used to draw these by hand.
This takes too much time in between design iterations.
These days, this has been solved through powerful tools that help produce mockups in a fraction of the time.
One such tool is PlaceIt.
In this review, I explore just how powerful PlaceIt’s various tools, especially the mockup tool, can be.
I spent a week tinkering and poking around its many features to see if the service is good value for money. Here’s what I found out.

Affordable, highly intuitive and easy-to-use platform with a vast library of mockup and design templates.
What is Placeit?
PlaceIt is a powerful mockup tool to help designers make mockups.
It has a rather extensive library of available templates that cover a wide range of products.
They have many mockups from digital assets like YouTube, Twitch, Facebook, and other social media design templates.
They even have other media assets like graphics and video templates.
They also have a pretty sizeable product template collection like t-shirts, flyers, business cards, and tote bags, among other physical design templates.
PlaceIt also has other design tools that complement this vast library making this a versatile all-in-one service.
The service’s ease of use is its major selling point. It makes designing and managing projects a breeze, as everything you need is right before you.
This makes it a robust and capable tool for seasoned professionals while being easy to understand for complete beginners.
- Extensive library of design templates
- Intuitive design tool
- Unlimited access with a monthly subscription
- Frequent updates
- Logo generator has limited features
- Video editor is pretty basic
Features
-
Mockup Library
PlaceIt’s most prominent feature is its extensive mockup library.
The service has thousands upon thousands of mockups for almost anything that you can think of.
They’ve got mockups for t-shirts, mugs, hoodies, and other apparel.
PlaceIt also has mockups for digital assets like business cards, posters, and covers.
They even have novelty items like trading card templates!
-
Easy Logo Creation Tool
PlaceIt’s very own logo maker is an easy-to-use, beginner-friendly tool.
It has the familiar drag-and-drop interface much like other popular logo makers out in the market.
For beginners, the tool gets the job done most of the time. But for professionals, it can be a bit too simplistic.
-
Graphics and Video Templates with Editor
PlaceIt also has an extensive template library. It has a vast collection of video and graphic assets for marketing materials.
The videos are customizable too, with a built-in basic video editing tool.
-
Social Media and Gaming Templates
PlaceIt also has a dedicated section for social media and gaming templates.
It has templates for Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter), among others.
The gaming section caters to streamers who need visual assets like backgrounds, overlays, and avatars.
Overall Performance
Overall, PlaceIt’s performance is great. The features work as advertised, especially the editors.
As a web-based service, it’s fast and can run on any computer as long as you have decent internet.
You can create short videos and marketing tools pretty much anywhere there’s wifi.
This makes it such a convenient and portable tool to use.
However, the editors aren’t as feature-packed as others on the market.
How I Tested Placeit
Now, let’s get on to the testing!
The signup
The signup process was pretty straightforward and familiar to pretty much anyone.
First, head to their webpage and click Free Account.
Next, pick the sign-up partner of your choice to create your free PlaceIt account.
After that, you’re immediately greeted with their whole mockup catalog.
Overall, the process for me was quick and painless.
So far, so good.
Trying out the Logo Maker
Next up, I wanted to try their very own Logo Generator.
First up, click on the Logos tab at the top. This will open the Logo generator section.
Like many automatic generators, the process is pretty easy to get the hang of.
First, it asks you for details like the company name, what industry or niche, and optional graphic.
You also get to pick a pre-generated peg that you would like your logo to be based on.
You then get to pick the fonts and colors of your chosen logo. Both are generated but could easily be tweaked.
Once all that’s done, the logo maker window opens in a new tab.
Here, you get to further edit the elements of your logo, like text and graphics.
In my testing, I found the editor easy to understand and get the hang of.
The layout looks similar to editors like Canva with its drag-and-drop functionality.
PlaceIt’s tools were easy to find and weren’t buried under layers of menu options.
Exploring the Mockup Library
Next, I wanted to check out PlaceIt’s main selling point: its extensive mockup library.
But in the interest of this review, I went in as any potential user would.
So I donned my entrepreneur cap and set out to make branding and marketing materials for my go-to fictional brand, Digital Brew Cafe.
To do this, I set out to generate three types of assets: custom t-shirts, custom to-go cups, and a short video clip for the social media pages.
First on the list is the t-shirt designs. Since PlaceIt allows you to upload your designs, I went ahead and used the logo we made with Design Pickle—you can check out my review of that service here.
Editing the mockups is pretty intuitive. The controls are familiar and easy to understand.
The mockup library is easy to navigate, as everything is properly labeled and categorized.
You can either use the search bar to find a specific mockup or use the categories on the left side panel to further refine your search.
That is exactly what I did when looking for the custom to-go cup mockup.
Now that’s done, only the video clip remains.
Testing the Video Editing Tool
Making a custom video clip is a little different from creating the other mockups.
However, it’s still quite simple and easy to grasp.
For this, we head over to the Videos tab.
Once there, you’re greeted with an extensive library of various video clips.
All of these are organized under different categories for easy access.
For this review, I wanted to create a mini teaser clip for Digital Brew’s supposed Facebook page.
I needed just a quick 10-second teaser clip for the first post.
Fortunately, PlaceIt’s video mockups are quite extensive, too.
Here’s what the editor looks like:
Like the other areas, it’s highly intuitive and simple to follow.
Alternatives to Placeit
PlaceIt is definitely a handy service. But if you’re still on the fence and would like to try other services, here are some good alternatives:

Value for Money
PlaceIt offers a free account that lets you access their library and tools, albeit at a limited capacity.
You can then individually download the mockups that you please.
However, the best way to take full advantage of PlaceIts services is by subscribing.
The company’s subscription model is one of the most reasonable I’ve seen in the market at the time of writing.
At around US$7 per month (if billed annually), you get limitless access to the vast mockup libraries and all their design tools.
This is great for small startups and brands who want high-quality mockups at high volumes.
