Hi, I’m Simon Berry, a UK-based landscape photographer passionate about shooting seascapes, particularly in Scotland.

Many years ago, I started trying to be a wildlife photographer but found that creating great images challenging. On a holiday in Scotland, I found my passion for shooting landscapes and seascapes.

The changeability at the coast is fantastic, and every day can be so different that it gives me enormous pleasure to try and create a feeling with the environment, which can be very wild.

My current kit consists of a Canon EOS R5 and Canon EOS R6 with the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L and the Canon RF 50MM f/1.2.

They are superb cameras, and the lenses are so sharp that you don’t need much else unless you need to print huge.

My photography changed a few years ago when I shot with a Hasselblad 503 Film Camera. You must take so much more time considering what you’re trying to capture. It’s easy sometimes to see what’s in front of you without absorbing what is happening.

The Canon EOS R5 produces excellent files. The colour edition is very good, and you can achieve great detail.

My backup camera is the Canon EOS R6. It is also very good, but it has a slight limitation with file size. Both are really easy to use and seem very reliable.

I use the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L and a Canon RF 50mm f/1.2 L for lenses.

Both produce super-sharp images with only a little distortion. The amazing thing is that since moving to mirrorless, the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 L has become even sharper than before when used with the Canon EOS 5D Mark III.

I have a full range of Lee filters, including soft, medium, and hard-edged graduated filters for various conditions. I also have a landscape Circular polariser and 3-stop and 6-stop Pro Glass filters.

My tripod is a Gitzo 3543LS and has been with me for a long time; very reliable and sturdy.

My only gripe is that it can occasionally lack height, as working in lots of awkward places often means the tripod is shorter than ideal.

So soon, a longer Gitzo 3543 XLS or maybe the Gitzo 5563GS will find its way into the bag.

The extra length can really help to provide extra separation so the image can be simplified when needed.

Kit list:

Canon R5
Canon R6
Canon EF 24-70 2.8L
Canon RF 50 1.2L
Gitzo 3543 LS Tripod
Really Right Stuff BH55 ballhead
Lee Filters/ holders
F Stop Lotus 30
Vallerret Tinden Gloves

I edit mostly in Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop but do use Capture One as well.

I love shooting in or just after bad weather, so being prepared is essential.

My Landrover has full winter tyres, so going out when the forecast is grim can be really interesting.

Thanks for the opportunity.
